The two most serious hyperglycemic emergencies are diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS). DKA most commonly occurs in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus or pancreatic disease, while HHS occurs more frequently with Type 2 diabetes.
