Of all the hormones in the body, only insulin causes the liver to take sugar out of the bloodstream and store it in the form of glycogen. All the other hormones—including stress hormones, sex hormones, growth hormones and glucagon—cause the liver to secrete glucose back into the bloodstream. The endocrine part in the Islets of Langerhans makes the hormones insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin. Alpha cells make the Glucagon and Beta cells make the Insulin. This is why people with Type 1 have to take insulin, the pancreas is no longer allowed to produce this life saving hormone. In Type 1 because insulin can no longer be created things do not seem so wonderful and we have to intervene. Now Glucagon is an emergency hormone.

    [Glucagon, Insulin] Reruns
A kid-patient with an insulin pump and the doc calls the prescribing physician to run a "check" on the pump serial number(uh-shouldn't you be calling the pump company and would they even give you that info if you weren't the police?) The doc immeadiently jumps in to action, sticking a humongous needle into the kids KNECK(what an interesting place) and gives him something, presumably glucagon.

But because digestion is slowed, I have to also slow my insulin. I took all of my insulin. Grabbing the 50-count bottle of glucose tabs and the emergency glucagon kit, I prepare to have “the talk&# with my wife. I’m chewing glucose tabs mixed with kool-aid mixed with more sugar, all the while watching my blood sugar drop and talking my wife through jabbing the glucagon harpoon into my leg if I fall over. I also restocked my glucagon supply.

If you have diabetes, you should talk with your healthcare provider about an insulin plan before you fast. In general, risk level is low in those whose diabetes is controlled through dietary means alone or with oral agents that do not stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas. It increases for those on oral medications that promote insulin secretion, becoming highest for those with type 1 diabetes. Patients may not realize the need for insulin and omit coverage.

For us, Q has had quite a few growth spurts this past year that have caused some unmanageable high blood sugars, particularly overnight when no amount of insulin seems to bring her back into range. High blood sugar can result from bad insulin. And for those using an insulin pump, pump failures such as a bubble or kink in the tubing, an empty insulin reservoir, a bent cannula or cannula that has come out, or a leak in the infusion set can cause a high.

“The healthy human pancreas is an awesome machine, secreting the exact right amount of insulin into the bloodstream to allow the glucose from your food to enter your cells and be used for energy. When you eat, your pancreas secretes more insulin. When you exercise, it dials back the insulin. And if you don’t eat for a long time, it makes another hormone called glucagon that tells your liver to put more sugar into your bloodstream.

Insulin Nation features a story on the bionic pancreas. We are one weak link, and our crippled glucagon response is the other (that last one is complicated, and beyond the scope of this post). Ed and his team have created a system that uses existing technology (a Dexcom G4, an iPhone, and two Tandem tSlim pumps) to make a new decision about insulin and glucose dosing every five minutes. Hope is a strange thing for someone who has lived with diabetes for as long as I have.

They postulate that leptin mediates this effect by suppressing glucagon and therefore glucose production via glycogen breakdown in the liver. Another effect of treatment with leptin was that the mice returned to a normal weight (vs those on "insulin monotherapy").

Lows are a result of too much insulin and not enough glucose. Often it's from too much insulin injected probably due to miscalculation of carbs consumed (or not eating what I originally planned to). Too little insulin and and too much glucose running amok in the body. Either from eating too much and not taking enough insulin or countless other b t reasons. If left untreated, one goes into insulin shock resulting in a seizure of sorts and then possible coma.

I pulled out a typical insulin syringe and filled it with 25 units of Glucagon.
